Tel Aviv Based painter, Shoshi Zak, is an image maker and thoughts collector, portraying figurative oil paintings and pencil drawings.
She studies still life, human figure and landscape scenes from direct observation as well as creating fictional dreamlike pieces, based on real moments, sensations and sights.
Shoshi's body of work portrays the dialogue between the imaginary and the perceptible. Her interest lies on one hand in exploring the fantastic aspect of everyday life and on the other, in finding the figurative quality of higher realms.
In my artwork, I craft metaphorical landscapes that bridge personal symbolism with cultural narratives. Using a variety of materials, I blend realistic drawing, observation, and imagination to create theatrical spaces, where every prop and detail marks a symbolic idea that echoes shared human experience. The background color marks place, time, and emotional states. Performers and objects exist on the seam between the playful, the unreal, and the unsettling. Pencil, paint, and texture allow the blending and blurring of the boundaries between the tangible and the symbolic. I draw inspiration from old-masters’ compositions, fashion magazines, pop songs, and classic literature.
The visual space I create, much like the theater, invites the viewer to wander through planes and realms, between layers of colors and elusive shapes, where a toy soldier, a plastic fish, a white rabbit, and a Pierrot are suspended in an eternal moment awaiting their meaning to be revealed.
